DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH AREAS
Among the broad areas of my research interest, I focus primarily on two domains: (1) general jurisprudence, and (2) the mutual implications between science/technology and normative disciplines such as law and ethics.
In the field of general jurisprudence, my interest centers on conceptual and methodological issues. Specifically, I have explored (i) analytical methodologies in jurisprudence and (ii) naturalistic or empirical approaches as alternatives. My research particularly engages with debates surrounding differing conceptions of law advanced by figures such as H.L.A. Hart, Joseph Raz, Ronald Dworkin, Brian Leiter, and others.
Regarding the intersection of science, technology, and normative inquiry, my work proceeds in two main directions. One explores science and technology from legal and ethical perspectives, addressing how to regulate these fields and structure their governance in light of normative, legal, and policy considerations. The other investigates how scientific and technological developments influence our normative concepts and practices. This includes research into emerging disciplines such as AI and robot law/ethics, neuro-law/ethics, and what I refer to as “posthuman law/ethics.”
I have published extensively in leading Korean journals on topics ranging from methodological and metaphysical issues in the Hartian and naturalistic jurisprudence to the legal and ethical implications of artificial intelligence, robotics, and other posthuman technologies. I have also presented my work at numerous conferences and colloquia both in Korea and internationally.
In addition, I translated Frederick Schauer’s Thinking Like a Lawyer: A New Introduction to Legal Reasoning (Harvard, 2007) into Korean. I contributed the article “Naturalism in Jurisprudence” (in English) to the IVR Encyclopedia of Social and Legal Philosophy (Springer, 2020) and have edited two academic books, The Present and Future of the Regulatory Governance of AI in Korean (Phaidon Publishers, 2023) and Law Meets Science (Beobmunsa Publishers, 2025).
